Ski gear in Bansko: bring your own or rent?

A winter trip to Bansko gets planned in stages, and equipment is usually the stage left for last. The season opens around the middle of December, but the exact date depends on the snow and on piste preparation — check it on banskoski.com rather than in an article from a previous year. Two or three months out is the right moment to decide what you will bring and what you will rent on site.

Boots are the part worth owning

If you ski more than a few days a year, your own boots change the day more than your own skis do. Rental boots are well maintained, but they are shaped for an average foot and a short stay; with a wider or flatter foot the difference shows up by lunchtime. Boots also travel by plane without an oversized-baggage fee.

The same goes for the helmet, goggles and gloves. They take little space, they are awkward to rent, and for children it is better that they stay the same all season — the child already knows how the buckles work.

What makes more sense to rent

Skis and snowboards. If you fly in, the ski-bag fee in both directions often matches a week of rental, and on top of that there is the risk of damage in transit. If you drive and ski often, bringing your own makes sense — particularly if the bindings are set for your weight and style.

Children’s equipment — almost always rented. Children grow between seasons, and rental lets you swap the length mid-week if the skis turn out to be too long. There is more on planning the first days on snow in our article on a child’s first ski days.

When and how to book

In the busy weeks — Christmas, New Year, late January and the February school holidays — the shops run at full capacity and the morning queue for fitting takes longer than the fitting itself. The practical order is simple:

  • Collect height, weight, shoe size and skiing level for everyone in the group in advance — bindings are set from those numbers.
  • Get fitted on your arrival day, not on your first skiing morning.
  • If you do have to go in the morning, be at the door before 8:30.
  • Ask to see the binding setting checked in front of you instead of taking it as given.
  • Keep the shop’s slip — swapping a pair later in the week then takes minutes.

Where to rent is the second question. Shops near the base station are convenient on fitting day but busiest around 8:40; a shop in the centre of Bansko is calmer, and the extra distance only matters if you carry skis on foot. If the gear stays at the shop overnight, check the opening time — some open at 8:00, others at 9:00, and that decides whether you catch the first hour on the piste.

Where the gear spends the night

Wet boots and skis do not belong in the room. Our hotel has a ski room where equipment dries by morning, and the gondola base station is 500 metres away — a walk you can do in ski boots without drama. The resort also runs ski lockers up in the ski area if you prefer to leave your skis at the top and ride up without them; terms and prices are on banskoski.com.

After the slopes, the relax zone with its jacuzzi, sauna and steam room is open from 14:00 to 20:00 and included in the room rate — useful precisely in the hours when you come back down.

The lift pass

Prices are announced before each season and they change, so there are no figures here. The logic, though, stays the same: a multi-day pass costs less per day than a single day; there are separate rates for children and for older adults; passes are sold at the base-station desks and online. If you arrive in the afternoon, work out whether your first day will be a full one — sometimes it pays to start the pass on day two.

A short list before you leave

  • Boots, helmet, goggles, gloves — your own, tried on beforehand.
  • Skis or board — rented, booked by name and measurements.
  • The binding-setting numbers saved on your phone.
  • A spare base layer — Bansko skis both below freezing and around zero.
  • Sunscreen and lip balm — at 2,000 m the sun works in winter too.
