Bansko is known for its ski season, but summer is when the town shows its other side — the Pirin mountains without snow, empty streets in the old quarter, and the lowest rates of the year.
The Gondola runs in summer too
The lift takes you up to Banderishka Polyana, where the mountain routes begin. That saves around 1,200 metres of climbing and turns day hikes that would otherwise be hard work into walks you can do with children. Summer opening hours are shorter than in winter — check them for the day you set out.
Vihren peak
2,914 metres — the highest peak in Pirin and the second highest in Bulgaria. From the Vihren hut the climb takes about three hours one way on a marked path. It is not technically difficult, but it is long and exposed; start early, with water and something windproof.
The Banderitsa lakes and the Baikushev pine
The shorter option: an hour and a half from Banderishka Polyana brings you to the Banderitsa lakes. On the same path stands the Baikushev pine, a tree around 1,300 years old and one of the oldest in Bulgaria. The walk suits families.
The old town
Bansko has a well-preserved Revival-period quarter that stays in the shadow of the slopes all winter. The Holy Trinity church with its tall bell tower, the Velyanova House with its original murals, and the house museums of Neofit Rilski and Nikola Vaptsarov. All within a ten-minute walk of the hotel.
Around Bansko
- The village of Banya — about 5 km away, with mineral springs and pools
- Dobarsko — the church of St Theodore Tiron and St Theodore Stratelates with its famous murals
- Razlog — 6 km away, the nearest town
- Popovo lake — the largest in Pirin, a full-day hike
What to expect from the weather
Days in Bansko are warm but not stifling — the town sits at 925 metres. Evenings are cool right through the season, so a jacket is needed even in August. In the mountains the weather turns quickly; afternoon thunderstorms are not unusual.
And the practical part
Summer is the cheapest period at the hotel, the relax zone with the jacuzzi and sauna runs as it does in winter, and breakfast is included. If you are planning long hikes, tell us — breakfast starts early enough to set out.
